Backups and moving

Choose the appropriate workspace and branch. Your plan, enabled modules and team permissions determine which actions are available.

On the program your data lives on the shop PC, in C:\ProgramData\CreekPOS\data. A backup is your only copy if that PC is stolen, breaks or catches a virus. On CreekPOS Online we keep the data on our servers, and you can download a copy at any time.

Back up now

  1. Backup on the top bar (Ctrl+B, managers), or Settings → Backup → Back up now (USB stick / folder)….
  2. Under Save the backup to choose a USB drive, On disk (next to the app), or Choose folder….
  3. Back up now. CreekPOS writes the copy, reads every file back to check it, and says Backup saved to: ….

A backup is a folder named CreekPOS-Backup- with the date and time, holding the settings, products, pictures, customers, users, credit, suppliers, stock, shifts, expenses, points and all the sales. It never holds the licence: a backup cannot activate another PC.

If you see The backup was not written completely there…, the USB stick was removed, is full or is faulty: try another one.

Keep one backup away from the shop PC: a USB stick you take home, or a folder that is copied to the internet. A copy on the same disk does not help if the disk fails.

The automatic backup

Settings → Backup → Automatic daily backup on exit or shift close: once a day, when you close the program or close a shift, CreekPOS backs up to the Auto-backup folder (empty means the Backups folder in C:\ProgramData\CreekPOS). Choosing a shop type at the first start switches it on. Old backups are kept, never deleted; clean the folder from time to time.

If no backup was taken for 3 days, the daily summary warns Last backup n days ago.

Restore

  1. Settings → Backup → Backup & restore. Under Backups location choose where the backups are (a USB stick, a folder).
  2. Pick one in Available backups: its date and how many receipts and products it holds. One marked (incomplete?) was cut short; choose another.
  3. In What to restore tick what you need: Settings & logo, Products, prices, stock, Credit customers (with suppliers, expenses and points), Users, Sales history.
  4. Restore selected, and confirm Restore the selected data? It replaces the current data.

Before restoring, CreekPOS takes a full safety backup of what is on the PC now, and keeps the current sales aside instead of deleting them. The receipt numbers never go backwards. A damaged backup is refused.

Restore from a file… opens a copy downloaded from CreekPOS Online, or a move file, and then shows the same restore screen.

Moving to a new PC

  1. On the old PC: Back up now to a USB stick.
  2. Release the licence: Settings → License → Release the license to move it to another PC (see Moving the licence).
  3. On the new PC: install CreekPOS, send us the release code and the new machine code, and activate with the new key.
  4. Settings → Backup → Backup & restore: pick the backup on the USB stick and restore everything.
  5. Check the printer and the drawer on the new PC (see Devices).

Passwords and tokens for e-mail or Telegram are not carried in the settings; type them again.

Moving to CreekPOS Online

You can start on the program and move to CreekPOS Online later without typing anything again:

  1. Create your CreekPOS Online account (see Signing up).
  2. On the program: Settings → Backup (or Settings → CreekPOS) → Move to CreekPOS…. Save the move file (by default on the Desktop). It holds your products with their pictures, customers and their balances, suppliers, cashiers, settings and the last 400 days of sales. Nothing changes on the PC.
  3. In the web app: Settings → Data → Import a desktop copy: choose the file, how many months of sales to bring, and whether to clear what is in the account first. Start the import.
  4. Connect the till: Settings → CreekPOS → Switch to CreekPOS… on the program, then type a pairing code (see Connecting a till).

The move file is limited to 48 MB: when a shop is bigger, the oldest days of sales are left out first, then pictures, and the result tells you what was left out.

Going the other way

On CreekPOS Online, Settings → Data → Download a copy saves everything in the same format as the program's backups. The program can open it with Restore from a file…, so your data is never locked in.

On this screen

Online · Data

Download a copy of everything in the Windows program's backup format (so you can leave whenever you like), or delete the account.

One click fills the shop with a realistic sample of your kind of shop: products with pictures, categories, customers, suppliers, stock and a few weeks of sales, so Today, the reports and the till have something to show. Remove it with one click whenever you like; what you add yourself stays.

Upload the backup file the CreekPOS desktop makes (Settings → Backup, or the copy it uploads to the cloud): products (with their pictures when the copy has them), customers, suppliers, accounts, sales and shifts move here under their original dates.

Passwords and tokens do not travel (the copy masks them): type the e-mail and Telegram settings again.

Deletion happens after 7 days - cancel any time before. Download a copy first.
